Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 as Forest’s goal drought deepens
Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, 31 October, in a Premier League match that summed up both clubs’ seasons so far. The home side took their chances; Forest, once again, did not.
The opening goal came in the 30th minute, and it was cruel on Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic. Brentford winger Dango Ouattara beat his man on the right and fired a low cross into the box, and the ball bounced off Milenkovic and looped over goalkeeper Matz Sels into the net.
Brentford sealed the win in the 76th minute. Substitute Jaidon Anthony broke down the right and crossed for Igor Thiago, who turned the ball home from close range. The shot took another deflection off the unlucky Milenkovic on its way in. It was Thiago’s second league goal of the season.
The scoreline flattered Brentford in one way: Forest had 15 shots to the home side’s seven, but managed only one on target all afternoon. James McAtee curled a good chance wide in the first half, and substitute Ryan Yates headed over from four yards out early in the second half. Brentford went close too, with Mathias Jensen’s free kick crashing against the crossbar. The win came in Brentford’s 100th Premier League match at the Gtech.
Why it matters
Forest remain the lowest scorers in the Premier League this season, with only six goals so far. That is the story of their campaign: they create chances but cannot finish them, and the travelling supporters booed the team off at full time. The result piles more pressure on Forest manager Oliver Glasner, whose side keep losing games they could have won. For Brentford, the win ended a winless run and gave manager Keith Andrews something to build on.
What happens next
Forest’s wait for goals goes on, and the pressure on Glasner will only grow if the drought continues into their next matches. Brentford, meanwhile, will want to turn one home win into a run of results and climb away from the lower half of the table.
