Suzuki own goal costs Villa as Fulham snatch 1-1 draw at Villa Park
Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham at Villa Park on Saturday, 31 October, after goalkeeper Zion Suzuki dropped a corner into his own net midway through the second half.
Nicolas Jackson had put Villa ahead in the 39th minute. He raced on to Johan Manzambi’s pass, beat Timothy Castagne and David Affengruber, and slid the ball past Bernd Leno. It was his fifth goal in as many Premier League matches, and his sixth in all competitions in October.
Villa could have led even earlier. Captain John McGinn hit the crossbar from the penalty spot after video review spotted a handball by Sander Berge. Suzuki then made a fine one-handed save to keep out Oscar Bobb before the break, but he could not hold Alex Iwobi’s inswinging corner and fumbled it over the line. Pau Torres twice headed wide late on as Villa pushed for a winner.
Why it matters
The draw lifts Villa three places to ninth and keeps them unbeaten in five league matches. Fulham climb above Coventry into 15th, having taken seven points from their past three games. Both sides were in the bottom three after four games of the season, so the result keeps both of their revivals going.
What happens next
Villa now turn to the Champions League, with a trip to Barcelona on Tuesday. Fulham will aim to carry their recent form into their next league match.
