Universal Music shares jump as streaming growth beats forecasts

Shares in Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s largest music company, jumped as much as 15% on Friday, 30 October, after its latest results showed music streaming subscriptions growing faster than expected.

The shares opened 7.7% higher on Amsterdam’s Euronext exchange and climbed as high as €18.20 during the day before closing at €17.09, up 7.9%. That made UMG the biggest riser on Amsterdam’s AEX index. About 6.04 million shares changed hands, more than three times the previous day’s volume.

The rally added around $2.5 billion to the company’s market value by the close, and as much as $4.8 billion at the day’s peak.

UMG published its third-quarter results on Thursday, 29 October. Recorded music subscription revenue grew 9.5% compared with a year earlier, excluding its recent Downtown acquisition, beating the 8.2% growth analysts had expected. Growth had slowed to 6.7% in the second quarter, so the rebound stood out. Total revenue for the quarter was €3.39 billion, up 11.7%, while physical music sales rose 17.4%.

Why it matters

The result matters because UMG’s shares had fallen about 30% so far in 2026 before Friday’s rally. Investors had worried that streaming growth was slowing and that the company was losing market share. The latest numbers suggest price rises agreed with streaming services and steady subscriber growth are working, and the company said pressure on its market share had eased. But analysts at JPMorgan cautioned that UMG may need a few more strong quarters to fully win investors back, Reuters reported.

What happens next

Investors will now watch whether UMG can keep subscription growth near this level in the final quarter of the year. The company’s finance chief, Matt Ellis, said UMG was focused on “sustaining that progress” and improving efficiency across the business.
