Canelo Alvarez beats Christian Mbilli to win back WBC super-middleweight title
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is a world champion again. The Mexican star beat Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision on Saturday, 31 October, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to take back the WBC super-middleweight title.
The three judges scored the 12-round fight 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110, all for Alvarez. Mbilli pressed forward for much of the night, but Alvarez took control from the middle rounds on, landing the cleaner punches while Mbilli’s heavy volume dried up.
The fight turned further in the eighth round, when the referee took a point from Mbilli for a shot to the back of the head. Mbilli kept coming until the final bell, but he could not land the big punch he needed, and neither man scored a knockdown.
It was Alvarez’s first fight in 13 months, since he lost his undisputed crown to Terence Crawford. Mbilli, who had been made full champion when Crawford gave up the belt, was making his first defence — and the defeat is the first of his professional career. His record now stands at 29 wins, one loss and one draw, with 24 knockouts.
Why it matters
The win puts Alvarez back at the top of the super-middleweight division at the age of 36, just over a year after many wondered whether his best days were behind him. For Mbilli, it is a harsh first lesson at world level: pressure alone was not enough against one of boxing’s most experienced champions.
What happens next
Alvarez said after the fight that he would take a little time off before returning to the gym, and he has said his next fight will probably come by February. Hamzah Sheeraz and WBC interim champion Lester Martinez are among the names mentioned as possible next opponents. Mbilli will now have to rebuild after his first defeat.
