Punjab Assembly session adjourned indefinitely after quorum failure
The Punjab Assembly session was adjourned indefinitely on Friday after the government failed to keep enough members in the house to meet the required quorum.
Deputy Speaker Zaheer Iqbal Channar was chairing the sitting in Lahore when the lack of quorum was pointed out and the session was brought to an end. None of the legislative business listed for the day was taken up, and the day’s agenda went unaddressed.
Opposition members protested and raised slogans during the proceedings. The opposition leader criticised the government for failing to ensure its own members turned up for a session it had itself convened.
Why it matters
A quorum — the minimum number of members who must be present — is what makes a sitting of the assembly valid. When the government cannot hold a quorum, scheduled laws, debates and questions stall, and the day’s work is lost.
It was also an embarrassment for the ruling side: the session collapsed not because of a vote or a walkout, but because its own benches were too empty to carry on.
What happens next
The session was adjourned sine die, which means no date has been set for the next sitting. The government will need to summon the house again, and it will need to make sure its members are present this time. No date for a new session had been announced at the time of writing.
