West End to dim its lights for Sir Patrick Stewart on 3 November

London’s West End theatres will dim their lights for two minutes at 7pm on Tuesday, 3 November, in memory of Sir Patrick Stewart, who has died aged 86.

The tribute was announced on Friday, 30 October, by the Society of London Theatre, which represents the West End. Its co-chief executive, Hannah Essex, said: “The theatre industry is mourning the loss of one of the greatest stage actors this country has ever seen. Sir Patrick Stewart was an acting giant whose seven-decade career is testament to his extraordinary talent and presence.”

Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, 28 October, after what his family described as a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. He was cared for by his wife, Sunny Ozell.

Stewart made his professional stage debut in 1959 at the Theatre Royal in Bristol and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, appearing in up to 60 productions. He later became known around the world as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. He was knighted in 2010 for services to drama and won two Olivier Awards. His final screen appearance, as Professor Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday, is due to be released in December.

Why it matters

Dimming the lights is the West End’s traditional farewell, reserved for its most distinguished figures. Stewart has been remembered in the same way as Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Michael Gambon in recent years.

His career was rare in spanning both classical theatre and global screen fame, from Shakespeare with the Royal Shakespeare Company to two of the biggest film and television franchises of all time.

What happens next

Theatres across the West End will lower their lights for two minutes at 7pm on Tuesday, 3 November. Tributes from fellow actors, including his close friend Sir Ian McKellen, have continued to pour in, and his final film appearance is expected in cinemas in December.
