Shafir to challenge Moné for AEW women’s title at Full Gear
Marina Shafir will challenge Mercedes Moné for the AEW Women’s World Championship at Full Gear, after the match was made official on the 31 October episode of AEW Collision. The pay-per-view takes place on Saturday, 14 November, at the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
The rivalry began on 21 October, when Shafir interrupted Moné’s celebration of her title win on Dynamite. Moné had kept the championship against Thekla at the WrestleDream pay-per-view, and Shafir stepped forward as her next challenger. On 28 October, Shafir beat Rachel Armstrong on Dynamite, and the two women then came to blows as the Death Riders and The Cut brawled around them.
Shafir is part of the Death Riders group, and the title match is her chance to take the top prize in AEW’s women’s division from Moné. The champion, who calls herself “The CEO”, has mocked Shafir and her group in the build-up, while Shafir has said she wants to show the champion — and everyone watching — who she really is.
The women’s title match joins a busy Full Gear card. Will Ospreay will defend the AEW World Championship against Kyle Fletcher in the main event, and the Young Bucks will defend the World Tag Team Championship against Mark Davis and Jake Doyle. The Brawling Birds will defend the Women’s World Tag Team Championship against Wrathlander, and Hangman Page, Brody King and Bandido will defend the World Trios Championship against Swerve Strickland and The New Level. The Death Riders will also face The Cut in an Anarchy in the Arena match.
Why it matters
A women’s world title match gives Full Gear one of its biggest fights, and it rewards a rivalry that has been building on AEW television for two weeks. Shafir has been presented as a serious threat, and a win would make her the new champion, while a win for Moné would extend her run at the top of the division. The match also adds to a card that already has five title matches, making Full Gear one of AEW’s biggest shows of the year.
What happens next
Full Gear takes place on Saturday, 14 November. The build-up will continue on Dynamite and Collision over the next two weeks, with both women expected to appear before they meet for the title.
