Saudi air defences shoot down drone over Riyadh, second scare for the capital in two days
Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone over the Riyadh region on Saturday, 31 October, the Saudi-led coalition said. Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Malki announced the interception on X, saying the drone had entered Saudi airspace and was heading for the capital. He said debris fell after the interception but no one was injured, and that the authorities were inspecting the site.
Al-Malki did not say who had launched the drone, or what its target was. Hours earlier, the coalition said it had shot down another drone over southern Saudi Arabia, and said that one had been launched by Yemen’s Houthi group. The two announcements came hours apart.
It was the second scare for the capital in two days. On Thursday, 29 October, the coalition said it had intercepted two ballistic missiles heading towards Riyadh. A day earlier, Saudi Civil Defence said debris from two downed missiles had damaged a building, a construction site and a vehicle. On Friday, the coalition said it had shot down a drone over the Mecca region — a claim the Houthis denied.
The attacks follow a deadly strike earlier in October, when a missile and drone barrage hit Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 300. The airport has since partially resumed operations.
Why it matters
The Saudi capital is now coming under attack almost daily, and each interception brings falling debris over a city of millions. For Pakistan, the fighting matters directly: Saudi Arabia is home to a large Pakistani expatriate community, and many Pakistanis live and work in Riyadh. The claims are also hard to check independently: the coalition announces interceptions on social media, the Houthis sometimes deny them, and neither side has published evidence that settles what happened.
What happens next
Watch for the coalition’s findings from its inspection of the debris, and for any statement from the Houthis about the Riyadh drone. Further interceptions, airport disruption or new travel advice from foreign governments would show the threat is still rising. Watch too for any guidance from Pakistan’s Foreign Office for Pakistanis living in Riyadh.
