92 News Anchor Rabia Ahsan Found Shot Dead at Home in Rawalpindi; Husband in Custody
Anchor Rabia Ahsan was found shot dead at her home in Rawalpindi on Sunday, 8 November 2026, police said. Her husband has been taken into custody, and police have launched a murder investigation.
Ahsan, 41, was an anchor with 92 News, a private Urdu-language news channel. She was found dead in the bedroom of her home in the Gulshanabad area, on Adiala Road, with a single gunshot wound to the front of her neck, just below the throat, Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Hassan Mushtaq Sukhera told reporters.
Police recovered the pistol believed to have been used in the shooting from the room. A bullet casing was also found at the scene, and the weapon has been sent for forensic analysis.
What the husband told police
The man in custody is Ahsan’s husband, Ahsan Tahir, a grade-18 officer at the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation, according to police sources.
In his initial statement, he told investigators the gun went off accidentally while he was playing with it, and that there had been no argument between the couple before the incident. A domestic worker at the house gave a similar account.
Police have not accepted that account. They say they are investigating from every angle and will not draw conclusions before the inquiry is complete. A murder case is being registered at the Sadar Bairuni police station, and the motive is still being established.
What happens next
Forensic teams have collected evidence from the house, and Ahsan’s body was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Rawalpindi for a post-mortem examination.
Police are also examining the emergency call made to police and Rescue 1122, and the husband’s mobile phone will be sent for forensic examination.
The investigation is being supervised by CPO Sukhera, with senior Rawalpindi police officers also part of the team.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari confirmed Ahsan’s death. First Lady Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari condemned the killing and called for a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation.
Why it matters
The death of a working journalist inside her own home has shocked Pakistan’s media community. Whether it was an accident, as the husband claims, or something else is now a question for the forensic evidence and the police inquiry.
For now, what police have confirmed is this: a 41-year-old anchor is dead, a weapon has been recovered, and her husband is in custody while investigators work out what happened.
