CENTCOM chief briefs Trump in person on Iran strike options as US weighs renewed attacks
The head of US Central Command briefed President Donald Trump in person at the White House on Thursday on military options for renewed strikes on Iran, as Washington weighs resuming major combat operations after next week’s midterms. The Wall Street Journal first reported the meeting.
Adm. Brad Cooper was joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House envoy Steve Witkoff. Cooper rarely briefs the president in person, which the Journal said could signal the US is moving closer to significant military operations.
The briefing also covered the US naval blockade of Iran: Trump wanted to hear directly whether it is working, and Cooper updated him on guiding oil tankers out of the Strait of Hormuz and on the economic pressure campaign run with Treasury. It followed a White House session the day before with Vice President JD Vance.
The US has boosted air defences, munitions and supplies in the region and moved some troops away from bases seen as vulnerable to Iranian retaliation. Ten US military cargo planes landed at Israeli air bases on Thursday, with more sent to Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Israeli broadcaster Kan reported.
Why it matters
The briefing shows Washington is preparing for a possible new round of strikes while keeping a diplomatic channel open — a dual track that leaves the region guessing which path Trump will choose.
Iran has threatened publicly and privately to hit a broad range of US and Gulf targets if attacked again, so any decision risks wider escalation. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, who said he had been briefed on the classified planning, called the plans “insane” and warned of a devastating escalation.
It also matters for energy markets: the briefing centred on the blockade and tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil route.
What happens next
No decision to resume large-scale strikes has been announced. Attention now turns to whether Trump orders action after the 3 November midterms, and whether diplomacy moves first.
Vice President Vance has proposed direct talks with Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei; Tehran has received his letter but not yet replied. Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, says progress depends on Iran’s seven conditions, including lifting sanctions, ending the blockade and unfreezing assets. Qatari mediators returned to Tehran on Friday for US-coordinated talks, described as at “a very sensitive stage”.
