Final Emerson poll puts Democrats 10 points ahead before US midterms
Democrats lead Republicans by 10 points in the final national poll before the United States midterm elections, according to Emerson College Polling. The survey puts the generic Democratic candidate at 52% and the Republican at 42%, with about 5% of voters still undecided.
The poll, published on 30 October, surveyed 1,000 likely voters between 24 and 26 October. It carries a credibility interval of plus or minus 3 percentage points, similar to a margin of error.
President Donald Trump holds a 37% approval rating in the same survey, against 57% disapproval — a net rating of minus 20 points. Emerson’s executive director, Spencer Kimball, said Republican support was at 42% when tracking began 15 months ago, exactly where it stands now, while Democratic support has climbed from 44% to 52% over the same period. At the start of tracking, Trump’s approval was almost evenly split, at 46% to 47%.
Democratic voters also report more enthusiasm about voting. The poll found 76% of Democrats were “very excited” to vote, compared with 64% of Republicans and 62% of independents. The cost of living was the issue voters named most often as shaping their vote, at 34%, followed by fighting corruption in government at 28%.
Why it matters
The midterms on Tuesday, 3 November, will decide control of Congress for the final two years of Trump’s term. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are on the ballot, along with 35 Senate seats.
Democrats need a net gain of just three seats to take the House, where Republicans currently hold 219 seats to the Democrats’ 214, with two vacancies. In the Senate, Democrats need a net gain of four seats to reach 51. A national poll lead does not decide individual races, however — the House will be settled across 435 separate district contests, and a poll is a snapshot, not a result.
What happens next
Both parties are making their final push for votes over the weekend before polling day on 3 November. If the polling lead holds, House control could become clear on election night, while the Senate picture may take longer to settle.
