Army and Rangers to Guard Gujranwala and Sahiwal By-Elections on 8 November
The federal government has approved the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Punjab Rangers to guard by-elections in two Punjab constituencies, NA-77 Gujranwala-I and PP-203 Sahiwal-VI, where voters go to the polls on Sunday, 8 November 2026.
The Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control issued a formal order for the deployment, after the Election Commission of Pakistan asked for security arrangements on 30 September and 2 October. Troops will be in place from 7 to 9 November — the day before polling, polling day itself, and the day after.
How the security plan works
The Punjab Rangers will act as the second-tier response force, while the army will serve as the third-tier standby and quick-reaction force. Both will support the Election Commission rather than run the polling itself.
According to reports, the army’s deployment was authorised under Article 220 of the Constitution, while the Rangers will be deployed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. The aim, officials said, is to ensure the by-elections are held peacefully.
The two contests
The NA-77 Gujranwala-I seat fell vacant after the death of PML-N MNA Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk, a four-time member of the National Assembly. The PML-N has given its ticket to his son, Rashid Bashir Virk, while the Pakistan Markazi Muslim League has fielded Qazi Muhammad Ibrahim Gujjar. In the 2024 general election, Mahmood Bashir Virk won the seat with 109,704 votes.
The PP-203 Sahiwal-VI seat in the Punjab Assembly fell vacant after the death of Chaudhry Muhammad Hanif. The PTI has announced a boycott of the PP-203 by-election, saying no candidate may use its name, flag or election symbol.
Why it matters
Voters in both constituencies will see soldiers and Rangers around polling stations on 8 November. The heavy security reflects how closely watched these two by-elections are: NA-77 has been a PML-N stronghold for decades, but the PTI-backed candidate came within about 18,000 votes there in 2024, and the PP-203 contest is being fought without the PTI on the ballot.
What happens next
Polling takes place on Sunday, 8 November. The security deployment ends on Monday, 9 November, which is also a public holiday across Pakistan for Iqbal Day.
