WhatsApp adds four new group chat features, including pins that never expire

WhatsApp is rolling out four new tools for group chats, including pins that never expire, a way to share recent messages with people who have already joined, status updates seen only by one group, and a filter for unread mentions and replies. The company announced the changes on 29 October 2026, and they are reaching users on Android and iPhone gradually, so they may not appear for everyone at once.

The most useful change for busy groups may be permanent pinning. Until now, a pinned message could stay at the top of a group chat for 24 hours, seven days or 30 days before it dropped away. Now members can keep an important message pinned indefinitely, so details such as a meeting place, an event schedule or an announcement stay easy to find.

WhatsApp is also extending Group Message History, the tool it introduced in February 2026. Until now, recent messages could only be shared with someone at the moment they were added to a group. Now a member can tap a person’s name in the chat and send them recent messages after they have already joined, so late arrivals can catch up. The shared messages stay protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning only the people in the chat can read them.

The other two additions are Group Status and a new filter. Group Status lets members post an update that only people in one particular group can see, and like ordinary status updates it disappears after 24 hours. The “Mentions and replies” filter narrows the chat list to unread group conversations where someone mentioned you or replied to you, including @all messages.

Why it matters

Group chats are where most WhatsApp users spend their time, and they are hard to follow. Important details get buried, new members arrive without context, and unread messages pile up across dozens of groups. These four tools tackle each of those problems, without changing how ordinary chats work.

What happens next

The features are rolling out gradually on Android and iOS over the coming weeks, so some accounts will see them before others. Keeping WhatsApp updated through the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store is the quickest way to get them when they arrive.
