AC Milan stun Inter 3-1 in derby to end champions’ unbeaten start

AC Milan beat Inter 3-1 in the Derby della Madonnina at San Siro on Saturday, 31 October, ending the champions’ unbeaten start to the Serie A season. Diego Moreira was the star of the night, scoring once and setting up Milan’s other two goals as his side won a fourth straight derby.

Milan raced into a two-goal lead inside ten minutes. Christian Pulisic headed home from a Moreira cross after four minutes, and Adrien Rabiot made it 2-0 with a fine first-time finish from a corner. Inter pulled one back when Alessandro Bastoni headed in from a Hakan Calhanoglu corner, but Moreira restored the two-goal lead before half-time with a curling free kick in the 43rd minute.

Inter pushed hard after the break and were denied a penalty in the 75th minute, when VAR ruled the ball had struck Mario Gila on the chest rather than his hand. Milan held on for a win that lifts them to 21 points, four behind Inter and Lazio at the top of the table. Inter coach Cristian Chivu has now lost all three of his derbies in charge.

Why it matters

The result blows the title race open. Inter had gone into the derby level with Lazio at the top, and Milan are the first team to beat them in the league since March — when Milan did it too. A fourth straight derby win also gives Milan the bragging rights in the city and puts them firmly back in the fight for the Scudetto.

What happens next

Milan will look to build on the win when Serie A continues next weekend, while Inter will aim to bounce back quickly and protect their place at the top. The two sides meet again in the return derby later in the season.
