Anton Lundell scores first career hat trick as Panthers beat Jets 5-2

Anton Lundell scored his first career hat trick on Friday, 30 October, as the Florida Panthers beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.

Lundell had scored only once in 13 games this season before Friday night, and he said afterwards that it had been a hard stretch. He opened his account at 2:38 of the second period, firing a wrist shot from the top of the left circle to put Florida 2-0 ahead.

Winnipeg fought back, but Lundell answered. After Morgan Barron had pulled the Jets to within one goal at 3-2 in the third period, Lundell poked in a rebound at the edge of the crease to make it 4-2 at 13:33. He then completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal at 18:21 to seal the 5-2 win.

Seth Jones was Florida’s other star, scoring a power-play goal and adding two assists for three points. Sam Reinhart scored the opening goal and added an assist, while goaltender Akira Schmid made 22 saves for his third straight win. Kyle Connor and Barron scored for Winnipeg, and Nico Daws made 33 saves in his first start for the Jets since joining from New Jersey.

Why it matters

The win was Florida’s third in a row and sixth in their past eight games, and it completed a quick double over Winnipeg after a 5-1 win in Winnipeg on Tuesday. Lundell’s hat trick was the Panthers’ fifth of the season, tying the club’s second-highest total for a single season.

For the Jets, the defeat extended a miserable run. They have now lost eight games in a row (0-6-2) and sit at 4-7-3 for the season. Jones also tied Keith Yandle’s record for the most points in a month by a Florida defenceman, with 18 points in October.

What happens next

Winnipeg will try to end the slide on Sunday, when they visit Carolina, with Barron saying the team has to “find a way” to come out on top. Florida, now 8-4-2, will look to stretch their winning run further into November.
