At Least 64 Injured as Train Derails in Egypt’s Giza Province

At least 64 people were injured on Sunday, 8 November 2026, when several carriages of a passenger train derailed and overturned in Egypt’s Giza province.

The accident happened near the Gerza junction in the Al-Ayyat area, south of Cairo, on the busy Cairo–Aswan railway line. Egypt’s Health Ministry said 52 ambulances were sent to the scene, and the injured were taken to hospitals in two governorates: 54 people to Al Wasta Hospital in Beni Suef and 10 to Al Ayyat Hospital in Giza.

What happened

Egyptian National Railways said a train travelling from Giza to Fayoum hit the rear of a second train travelling from Cairo to Aswan. The crash happened between Kafr Ammar and Al Raqqa stations, and several carriages left the tracks and overturned.

Early reports put the number of injured at around 60, but the Health Ministry later confirmed at least 64. Some news outlets reported higher figures as the day went on, so the final toll may still change. No deaths had been confirmed by the Health Ministry at the time of writing.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered hospitals in Giza and Beni Suef to stay on high alert and told medical teams to give the injured all the care they need.

Why it matters

Train travel is one of the main ways millions of Egyptians move around the country, and the Cairo–Aswan line is one of its busiest routes. Services on the line were suspended after the crash, leaving passengers stranded while railway teams worked to clear the wreckage and restore services.

Rail accidents are a recurring problem in Egypt, where crashes have often been linked to human error or signal failures. Each new accident adds pressure on the government to improve safety on an ageing railway network.

What happens next

Egypt’s Public Prosecution has taken over the investigation to find out what caused the derailment. Prosecutors have ordered police inquiries and are questioning witnesses and injured passengers.

The railway authority has sent maintenance and technical teams to inspect the site, clear the wreckage and get trains running again. Officials have not yet said when normal services will resume or when the investigation will report its findings.
