Coventry climb out of the drop zone with 3-1 win over Sunderland
Coventry City beat Sunderland 3-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday, 31 October, climbing out of the Premier League relegation zone and leaving Sunderland at the bottom of the table.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the scoring in the 17th minute with his first Premier League goal, and Taiwo Awoniyi doubled the lead in the 37th minute with his first league goal for Coventry after winning the ball from Luke O’Nien. Jack Rudoni made it 3-0 early in the second half, his shot from the edge of the box taking a deflection off Omar Alderete.
Sunderland pulled one back in the 67th minute, when Enzo Le Fée scored from the penalty spot after Ethan Pinnock handled in the area. Referee Simon Hooper gave the penalty only after a long check at the video screen. Alderete was sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time as Sunderland finished the match with 10 men.
Coventry manager Frank Lampard praised his side’s approach, telling Sky Sports the performance was “really good” from beginning to end. The win was Coventry’s third of the season and lifted them to 15th place with nine points from nine matches. Sunderland have only five points from the same number of games and one point from five matches away from home. Le Fée’s penalty was also Sunderland’s first Premier League goal since 20 September.
Why it matters
For Coventry, the win ends a run in which they had failed to score in five of their previous eight matches, and it moves them above Manchester United in the table. For Sunderland, the problems are piling up. They have taken just one Premier League point since their Europa League campaign began in mid-September, and their finishing let them down again, with Brian Brobbey and Chemsdine Talbi both missing good chances.
What happens next
Coventry travel to Everton on Friday, 6 November, while Sunderland host Chelsea on Sunday, 8 November. Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris said consistency was the key word for his side, adding that the team had to “assume the reality and get better through consistency”.
