Ex-Typhoon Champi’s remnants bring a run of storms to Alaska

Alaska was facing a run of storms as the weekend ended, with the remnants of the year’s strongest typhoon leading a parade of weather systems across the state. The US National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings, high-wind warnings and flood watches as heavy rain, snow and strong winds moved in.

The first system was what remained of Super Typhoon Champi, which reached winds of 185 miles per hour (296 km/h) over the western Pacific on 20 October, the strongest storm of 2026 so far. It brushed Guam and brought heavy rain to Taiwan and Japan before weakening and crossing the Pacific. Its remnants were tracking through the Bering Sea towards Alaska.

In the Alaska Range, winter storm warnings were in place into Friday morning, with more than 15 inches of snow expected and gusts above 60 mph. Around Thompson Pass in the Chugach Mountains, 10 to 15 inches were forecast, with visibility dropping below half a mile. On the coast, a flood advisory at Hooper Bay warned of water 2 to 4 feet above normal high tide from 29 October into the early hours of Saturday, 31 October. An earlier storm on 23 October had damaged a power line in Kivalina, leaving about 25 people sheltering overnight at the local school; power had mostly been restored by 27 October.

Why it matters

The storms matter because they are arriving one after another, giving coastal communities little time to recover between them. Alaska’s emergency operations centre was already at Level 2 of 4, an enhanced watch. Forecasters warned that some areas around the Gulf of Alaska could see 15 to 20 inches of rain by next Thursday, with up to 10 feet of snow on the highest peaks.

What happens next

Two more lows were due to follow the first. The second was expected to move into the Bering Sea on Saturday and reach the Gulf of Alaska by Monday, and a third was due to follow on Monday and move into the Gulf by early Thursday. The heaviest rain was expected on coastal areas, while the mountains picked up the snow.
