Fire damages Senatobia police headquarters as federal investigators look into cause

A fire damaged the headquarters of the Senatobia Police Department in Mississippi on Saturday morning, 31 October, and federal investigators are looking into what caused it.

The US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is investigating the fire alongside local agencies. It was not yet clear what started the blaze or whether it was set deliberately.

Firefighters were called at 4:58am after smoke was reported, and crews quickly brought the fire under control, according to the Senatobia Fire Department. No details about the extent of the damage had been released.

The fire comes at a difficult time for the small department. Senatobia, a city of about 8,000 people around 40 miles south of Memphis, has been at the centre of anger since June, when an officer fired into a vehicle and killed one-year-old Kohen Wiley while investigating a shoplifting call at a Walmart.

Wiley, who was Black, was in the vehicle with his mother, who was unharmed, and her friend, who was seriously injured. The two women denied stealing anything, and no charges have been filed against them.

In September, the police chief was fired after reporting by The New York Times, Mississippi Today and Verite News said he had used racist slurs in private text messages. Earlier this month, the officer involved in the shooting, Sergeant Hunter Foster, resigned, although the Mississippi Attorney General’s office had cleared him of criminal wrongdoing after concluding his use of force was justified.

Why it matters

The fire has hit a police department already facing deep distrust in its own community. The killing of a one-year-old, the racist messages that cost the chief his job, and the decision to clear the officer have all fed months of public anger in Senatobia.

Investigators will now have to establish whether the fire was an accident or a deliberate act. Until they do, the blaze will hang over a department that was already struggling to rebuild trust.

What happens next

The ATF and local agencies will continue their investigation into the cause of the fire. No findings had been announced, and the police department, fire department and Tate County Sheriff’s Office had not commented beyond the fire department’s statement.

Any finding that the fire was set on purpose would raise fresh questions about safety and security at the department, and about how the town moves forward after a year of controversy.
