Foxconn unveils three new electric vehicles at its Tech Day in Taipei
Foxconn has unveiled three new electric vehicles at its annual Hon Hai Tech Day in Taipei, pushing further into the car business. The company, best known for making iPhones, showed off the new models on Friday, 30 October.
The three vehicles are the MODEL A+ and MODEL K+ SUVs and the MODEL K compact truck. They are “reference” designs — ready-made platforms for carmakers to build their own branded vehicles on, rather than cars Foxconn will sell itself. With the new additions, its reference range now stands at 12 models.
The MODEL A+ is a luxury B-segment SUV with in-wheel motors and a roomy interior Foxconn says can serve as temporary living space or backup power for camping. The MODEL K+ is a cheaper lifestyle SUV for younger buyers, styled after Japan’s city pop era of the 1970s and 1980s. The MODEL K is a small kei-class truck for last-mile delivery, styled after Foxconn’s MODEL T electric bus.
The event also featured Foxconn’s battery work, from materials to cells and packs, along with electrical architecture and powertrains for two- and three-wheeled vehicles. Honda R&D and Mitsubishi Electric Mobility also spoke about their work with Foxconn.
Why it matters
Foxconn is the world’s largest electronics manufacturer, and its move into cars shows how the line between tech companies and carmakers keeps blurring. By offering ready-made designs, Foxconn is betting that car brands — especially smaller ones — would rather buy a proven electric platform than spend years and billions developing one from scratch.
The choice of vehicles also shows where Foxconn sees the gaps. Small SUVs are the fastest-growing part of the car market, and Japan’s kei trucks are a huge niche few global carmakers serve well. If carmakers adopt these designs, Foxconn could become a major behind-the-scenes supplier to the car industry, just as it already is for smartphones.
What happens next
The test now is whether carmakers sign up to build vehicles on these platforms. Foxconn’s chief strategy officer for electric vehicles, Jun Seki, said the new models should help customers get vehicles to market faster and at lower cost, but no customer deals were announced with the unveiling.
Investors will get a fuller picture when Foxconn reports third-quarter earnings on 12 November. Reuters also reported on 30 October that Foxconn was working on a possible tie-up with OpenAI, although details remained limited.
