OpenAI to merge ChatGPT and Codex into one shared usage allowance in December
OpenAI will combine the usage allowances for ChatGPT and Codex into a single shared pool from December, so paying subscribers will draw both chat and coding work from the same allowance. The change applies to the Plus, Pro and Business plans. It was set out in OpenAI’s Help Center page on ChatGPT and Codex usage limits, which was updated on 31 October.
Usage will be counted in tokens, the units of information a model reads and writes. More advanced models and more complex tasks will generally use more of the allowance, while instant chat will not draw from it at all. Subscribers will be able to see their combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings, under Usage.
The change is part of OpenAI bringing the agent features of ChatGPT Work into the main ChatGPT experience. Codex, its coding tool, is available through ChatGPT, code editors and the terminal. OpenAI has not given an exact launch day in December or published allowance amounts for each plan, and it had earlier flagged the change in a checkout notice without giving a start date.
Why it matters
Until now, chat and coding have effectively had separate budgets. From December, a heavy afternoon of Codex work will eat into the same allowance a subscriber would otherwise spend on ChatGPT, so developers and teams that use both will need to plan their usage together. The upside is that allowance no longer sits unused in one place while the other runs out. The risk is the opposite: a long coding session could leave little room for ordinary chat before the next reset.
What happens next
OpenAI has not yet said when in December the shared allowance will start, or how large each plan’s allowance will be. Subscribers should watch for that detail and check the Usage page in Settings once December arrives. OpenAI expects most users will not need to wait for a reset more often than they do now, but that is a forecast, not a promise. Anyone who reaches the limit will have to wait for the reset, upgrade their plan, or buy credits for eligible features.
