Rubio and Brazil’s Vieira agree to meet again as US–Brazil tensions ease
The United States and Brazil have taken a first step towards easing their diplomatic row. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday, 31 October, that he had spoken with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira at the Group of 20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, hosted by Rubio, and that they would meet again in the coming weeks.
They spoke briefly in Atlanta, and a source familiar with the plans said they had agreed to meet again before a G20 leaders’ summit in Miami in December. Rubio said they were expected to meet sooner, at a G7 foreign ministers’ summit in France next month, where Brazil will attend as an observer.
The talks follow weeks of friction. In August, the Trump administration revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador in Washington. Tensions rose again this week, after the United States granted a visa to Flávio Bolsonaro, who left Brazil after losing the 25 October runoff to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula won with 51.79% of valid votes, against 48.21% for Bolsonaro. Flávio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday, 28 October.
Rubio said on Saturday that the US government “was not involved directly in any of the moves” that led to Flávio Bolsonaro’s departure. Reuters reported, citing a US official and a person familiar with the matter, that President Donald Trump has no current plans to back Flávio Bolsonaro’s political ambitions. His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, is serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup after his 2022 re-election loss.
Why it matters
It is the first public sign that both sides want to keep talking rather than let the dispute deepen. Their row has touched visas and diplomacy. A Brazilian official played down the tensions, including Brazil not yet approving Trump’s pick for ambassador in Brasília. But neither side has announced any agreement yet — only a plan to meet again.
What happens next
The next test comes in November, when France hosts the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, with Brazil attending as an observer. The two ministers are then expected to meet again before the G20 leaders’ summit in Miami in December. Watch for concrete steps, such as progress on the stalled US ambassador post in Brasília.
