Saudi coalition says it shot down a Houthi drone over the Mecca region — the Houthis deny it

Saudi Arabia’s air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone over the Mecca region on Friday morning, 30 October, according to the Saudi-led coalition. The coalition said the drone had been launched by Yemen’s Houthi group.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Malki announced the interception in a statement reported by the Saudi Press Agency. He also said a cruise missile launched by the Houthis had been intercepted and destroyed in Saudi Arabia’s western region in the early hours of the same day.

The Houthis denied the claim the same day. Their military spokesman, Yahya Saree, said on X that the group had carried out no operation towards Saudi territory on Friday, and called the coalition’s account false. He said Houthi operations target Saudi oil facilities and military bases, not holy cities. The group has repeatedly denied targeting Mecca and Medina, Islam’s two holiest cities, despite earlier coalition accusations.

The claim came at the end of a week of cross-border attacks. On Thursday, the coalition said it had intercepted two ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis towards Riyadh. Saudi Civil Defense said falling debris left one person with minor injuries and damaged a house and a vehicle. No damage or injuries were reported from the Mecca drone interception itself.

Why it matters

Mecca is Islam’s holiest city, home to the Kaaba, and it draws millions of pilgrims from around the world every year, including large numbers from Pakistan. Any claim of an attack near the city, even one that is denied and disputed, carries far more weight than a strike on a military or energy target.

The dispute also shows how hard it is for the public to know what happened in fast-moving air-defence claims. One side says a drone was stopped over the Mecca region, the other says no such operation took place, and neither side has published evidence that settles the question.

What happens next

Watch for any further statement from the coalition, including whether it publishes wreckage, images or flight details to support its account. Also watch for any further response from the Houthis, and whether more drones or missiles are reported over Saudi Arabia in the coming days.
