Ten killed as bus carrying young workers crashes into truck near Cairo

Ten people were killed and 24 others were injured on Saturday when a bus carrying young workers crashed into a truck on a highway west of Cairo, Egypt’s health ministry said.

The crash happened on Saturday morning at the junction of the Middle Ring Road and the Al-Dabaa Highway in Giza, near 6th of October City.

The ministry said 20 ambulances were sent to the scene, and the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Ten of the injured were in a critical condition.

Local reports said the bus was carrying workers aged between 15 and 20, most of them from the village of Tadros in Fayoum, on their way to work at a farm along the Dabaa Road.

The reports said the bus hit a lorry that was parked at the side of the road. The driver was taken into custody in hospital, and the case has been passed to prosecutors.

The health ministry described its casualty figures as preliminary. Its spokesman, Dr Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, said hospitals near the crash site had been told to get ready to receive the injured.

Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsi ordered urgent financial help for the victims and their families.

Why it matters

The crash is the latest in a string of deadly road accidents in Egypt. Earlier this month, 13 people were killed and 34 injured when a truck hit a tourist bus west of Cairo. Last month, 22 people died in a bus crash in Sinai, including 10 Jordanian tourists. In August, at least 18 people, many of them children, were killed in northern Egypt when two pick-up trucks carrying farm day-labourers collided.

Road crashes kill thousands of people in Egypt every year, and are often blamed on reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance and weak enforcement of traffic rules.

Saturday’s victims were also young farm workers travelling to a day’s work, a group that often travels in crowded minibuses.

What happens next

Police are reviewing camera footage from near the scene and taking statements from witnesses to work out exactly what happened. The driver remains in custody, and prosecutors are investigating the crash.

The health ministry is expected to update the casualty figures as hospitals report back, and the victims’ families are due to receive the emergency financial help ordered by the minister.
