Whole Foods ashwagandha capsules recalled over possible salmonella — check lot 2025-26227
One lot of ashwagandha capsules sold under Whole Foods Market’s own 365 brand has been recalled in the United States because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall covers 365 Whole Foods Market Standardized + Full Spectrum Blend Ashwagandha Capsules in 120-count bottles.
Vitality Works Inc., of Albuquerque, New Mexico, announced the recall on Friday, 30 October, and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the company’s announcement the same day. The notice was updated on 30 October to say the product was sold nationwide, rather than in selected states only.
The affected bottles can be identified by lot number 2025-26227 and expiry date 10/13/2028, both printed on the bottom of the bottle. The product code, known as the UPC, is 9948252099. The capsules were sold from 24 November 2025 through 20 October 2026, online through Amazon and at Whole Foods Market stores nationwide.
No illnesses had been reported when the notice was issued. The possible contamination was found through routine sampling of a single retail unit, according to the company. The recall applies to this one lot only, not to every bottle of the supplement.
Why it matters
Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The FDA notice warns that infection can be serious, and sometimes fatal, for young children, frail or elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and cause more severe illness.
The long sales window is the main reason to check cupboards carefully. The lot was on sale for almost 11 months, and with an expiry date in October 2028, bottles may still be in people’s homes. Checking the lot number on the bottom of the bottle is the only way to tell whether a bottle is affected.
What happens next
Anyone with a bottle from lot 2025-26227 should not take the capsules. The company says to throw the bottle away and not return it to the store. Refunds are available at any Whole Foods Market store. People with questions can contact Vitality Works on (505) 268-9950, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time. Anyone who took capsules from the recalled lot and develops symptoms should seek medical advice.
