Man charged over explosives in Belfast after two days of searches
A 35-year-old man has been charged under explosives and firearms law in Belfast, after police searched properties in two areas of north Belfast over two days.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said detectives from its Terrorism Investigation Unit charged the man on the evening of Saturday, 31 October. He faces two counts of possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances, and one count of possessing a prohibited weapon described as one that discharges electricity or noxious gas.
The charges followed searches at properties in the Shankill Road and Edwina Street areas on Friday, 30 October, and Saturday, 31 October. Police said a number of suspicious devices, along with other items, were found during the searches and seized for forensic examination.
Local residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution while the operation was under way, with Ammunition Technical Officers working alongside police. Police said the residents have now been allowed to return home.
The man is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 2 November. Police did not name him in their statement, and said their investigation was continuing.
Why it matters
The charges bring a two-day public safety operation in a busy residential area of north Belfast to a first court step, while the underlying investigation remains open.
Explosives charges under the Explosives Act are serious, and the forensic examination of the seized devices will be central to how the case develops. For residents of the Shankill Road and Edwina Street areas, the end of the evacuation means a return to normal life after two days of disruption, cordons and a heavy police presence.
The case also underlines the continuing role of the PSNI’s Terrorism Investigation Unit in responding to suspected explosives finds in Northern Ireland, working alongside army bomb disposal specialists.
What happens next
The man is due in Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 2 November, when the charges against him will be put to him and the next stage of the case will be decided.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident, and further detail may emerge once the matter has been heard in court.
