Three killed, 25 injured as bus hits sand truck on Egypt’s Red Sea road

At least three people were killed and 25 others injured on Friday, 30 October, when a passenger bus collided with a heavy truck on the road between the Red Sea resort town of Hurghada and Ras Gharib in Egypt.

The bus hit a truck loaded with sand, according to the Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm, cited by the Spanish outlet Demócrata. The bus driver was among those killed. The German news agency dpa, citing Egyptian media, reported the same toll: three dead and 25 injured.

Twenty of the injured were later discharged after treatment, while five remained in hospital, according to the Egyptian newspaper Youm7. Their injuries included fractures and bruising, ranging from moderate to critical. Security teams and traffic officers went to the scene and opened an investigation into the cause of the crash, including whether human error or a breach of traffic rules played a part.

The crash came a day before a second deadly collision in Egypt, in which a minibus hit a truck on the Middle Ring Road in Giza province on Saturday, 31 October, killing 10 people and injuring 24 others, according to the country’s health ministry. Together, the two crashes killed 13 people in two days.

Why it matters

Egypt has one of the highest road-death tolls in the region. Its state statistics agency records more than 5,000 people killed and more than 75,000 injured in road accidents each year, according to News Central. The Red Sea road is a busy route for workers and tourists travelling between Hurghada and Cairo, and crashes involving heavy trucks are a repeated cause of mass casualties. Earlier in October, 13 people were killed when a truck struck a tourist bus west of Cairo.

What happens next

Police and prosecutors are investigating the Red Sea crash, and their findings will decide whether anyone faces charges. The five people still in hospital will continue to receive treatment, and their condition will be watched closely. The crash is also likely to add to calls for tighter enforcement of speed limits and truck safety on Egypt’s highways, though no new measures have been announced.
