Australia’s GovCMS raises website hosting prices 10% from 1 November
Australia’s GovCMS platform, which hosts government websites, will charge 10% more for subscriptions from Sunday, 1 November. The increase applies to new subscriptions and to renewals that start on or after that date, GovCMS said in an announcement on 21 October.
GovCMS is the shared hosting platform for Australian government agencies, built on the open-source Drupal system. It runs the websites of departments and agencies, handling security updates, maintenance and infrastructure for most customers. The price rise was reported by The Drop Times on 27 October.
Not every agency will pay more on 1 November. Agencies that have already paid for a subscription period running past November will keep their current rate until their next renewal. GovCMS said it would send customers a proposal with their revised charges about two months before their subscription ends, so agencies should check that proposal rather than the public pricing page, which still showed last year’s rates when checked.
GovCMS blamed rising costs for technical specialists, platform engineering and cybersecurity tools. The programme runs on a full cost-recovery basis, meaning its operating costs are passed on to the agencies that use it. The fees cover running and maintaining government websites, not a licence charge for Drupal itself. A previous price rise took effect on 1 November 2025, after being announced on 28 October 2025, but no percentage was given then.
Why it matters
GovCMS hosts many of Australia’s government websites, so a 10% rise will feed into agency budgets at renewal time. Because the increase only bites when a subscription starts or renews, the cost will land at different times for different agencies, but every renewal from 1 November will cost more.
What happens next
From 1 November, new subscriptions will be charged at the higher rate, and renewals will follow as they come due. Agencies with subscriptions running past November will see the increase at their next renewal, when GovCMS sends a proposal with the new amount. The platform also offers a second hosting model, Platform as a Service, where agencies manage their own Drupal maintenance and security, and prices for that model are set in tailored proposals rather than a published rate.
