Barcelona hit Alavés for six to go back top of La Liga

Barcelona thrashed Alavés 6-1 at the Spotify Camp Nou on Saturday night, 31 October, to return to the top of La Liga.

Raphinha and Lamine Yamal scored two goals each, with Fermín López and substitute Anthony Gordon adding the others.

Barcelona led 4-0 at half-time and were 6-0 up before former Real Madrid striker Mariano Díaz pulled one back late for the visitors.

The win was the perfect response after Barcelona lost to Real Madrid last weekend. It took Hansi Flick’s side to 30 points from 11 games, two points clear of second-placed Atlético Madrid. Alavés are now without a win in seven league matches.

Yamal was the star of the night. According to football statistician MisterChip, he is the first player since Lionel Messi to reach double figures in both goals and assists before November, with 11 goals and 12 assists.

Why it matters

Barcelona looked short of confidence after the Clásico defeat, but this was a statement win. Four goals before half-time settled the match early, and the second-half goals showed the depth of the squad, with a substitute getting on the scoresheet too.

For Alavés, the defeat extends a worrying run. Seven games without a win leaves them sliding towards the bottom of the table, and they will need to find a response quickly.

What happens next

Barcelona host Aston Villa in the Champions League at the Camp Nou on Tuesday, 3 November. Alavés travel to Anaitasuna in the Copa del Rey the same day.
