Omar Abdullah marries journalist Nidhi Razdan

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has married journalist Nidhi Razdan. He announced the news himself on social media on Saturday, 31 October, a day after the marriage was solemnised.

In a post on X, the 56-year-old shared four photographs of the couple and wrote, “A new journey began yesterday,” adding a ring emoji and tagging Razdan. She shared the same photographs and replied, “It’s done bro,” also with a ring emoji. The pictures show the couple in wedding dress, smiling for the camera.

Sources quoted by the news agency PTI said the marriage was solemnised on Friday under the Special Marriage Act, with family members from both sides as witnesses. The Act allows a civil marriage without either partner changing religion. Reports differed on where the registration took place: The Hindu BusinessLine said it was in Srinagar, while PTI placed it in New Delhi. Both accounts agreed that family functions were held in Srinagar and New Delhi, and were attended by close relatives from both sides, including Abdullah’s parents, Farooq Abdullah and Mollie, and Razdan’s parents, M. K. Razdan and Sarla Razdan.

It is the second marriage for both of them. Abdullah’s first marriage, to Payal Abdullah, was dissolved by an order of the Supreme Court in July this year, after the two reached a settlement. Razdan, 49, is a former executive editor of NDTV, where she was one of India’s best-known television news anchors.

Why it matters

Abdullah is a serving chief minister, and Razdan is a prominent journalist, so the wedding drew wide attention in India as soon as the photographs appeared. It also ends months of public speculation about the couple’s relationship, which they had not confirmed before the announcement.

The low-key nature of the ceremony stood out too. There was no big public event or formal statement. The couple chose to share the news directly with the public through their own social media accounts, after the ceremonies were over and only close family had attended.

What happens next

So far, neither Abdullah nor Razdan has shared more detail beyond the social media posts, and no official statement has been issued. Any further photographs or comments from the couple are likely to come through their own accounts in the coming days, rather than through a formal announcement.
