India switches on caller-name display: unknown numbers will now show a name from 1 November
From Sunday 1 November, mobile users in India will start seeing the name of an incoming caller next to the phone number, even when the number is not saved in their contacts. India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has told all telecom operators to switch on Calling Name Presentation, or CNAP, on 4G and 5G networks.
For an unsaved domestic call, the name shown will be the one in the caller’s operator records — usually the name given during Know Your Customer (KYC) checks when the SIM was bought. If the number is already saved in the phone, the saved name still wins. Calls from abroad will simply show “International Call” instead of a name. No app or request is needed: it works through the network itself.
The order, sent to operators in a circular dated 13 October, covers Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and state-owned BSNL. It follows recommendations from the telecom regulator, TRAI, in February 2024, and trials run by Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea. Older 2G and 3G networks and landlines are not covered yet; the DoT says it will look at those separately.
Why it matters
India has struggled for years with spam, scam and impersonation calls, and most people now rely on third-party apps such as Truecaller to guess who is ringing. A name supplied by the network, drawn from verified records, should be harder to fake than a crowd-sourced label — and it reaches every 4G or 5G user, not only those who install an app.
But the name is only as honest as the record behind it. It shows who registered the SIM, not necessarily who is holding the phone, so a borrowed or wrongly registered SIM can still mislead. CNAP will not end spam or fraud on its own: a familiar-looking name is no guarantee that a call is safe.
What happens next
From 1 November, users should start seeing names on unsaved calls on 4G and 5G, with no action needed from them. People who have switched on Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR), which hides their number, will not have their names shown. Businesses can ask to show a verified trade name instead of a personal one. Two questions remain: whether names appear reliably on every handset and network from day one, and whether the DoT will extend the service to 2G, 3G and landlines.
