One dead after flash floods hit Henderson, Nevada

One person has died after flash flooding swept through Henderson, Nevada, on Friday, 30 October 2026. Fire crews carried out three swift-water rescues in the city, pulling four people from floodwater.

The fatal rescue happened near Lake Mead Parkway and North Pueblo Boulevard, where a person was pulled from a wash. City officials said the person went into cardiac arrest after being rescued and was taken to hospital, where they died. The person has not been named.

The other two rescues involved drivers. Two people were taken from a vehicle that floodwater had swept off the road east of the Lake Las Vegas entrance, and a driver on North Milan Street, near Drake Street, climbed onto the roof of a stalled vehicle before being rescued. Officials said no one was injured in either of those rescues.

The storms hit much of the Las Vegas Valley on Friday afternoon, bringing heavy rain and hail. The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings covering the Las Vegas Strip, Henderson and Lake Las Vegas, and said up to an inch of rain had already fallen in parts of the valley.

Lake Mead Parkway was closed east of Lake Las Vegas Parkway because of flooding and debris, with no reopening time given as of 3:30 p.m. on Friday. More than 4,000 NV Energy customers lost power at one point in the afternoon, and lightning forced a ground stop at Harry Reid International Airport, delaying flights.

Why it matters

Desert cities such as Las Vegas can flood with frightening speed. Hard, dry ground and paved streets give rainwater nowhere to soak in, so a short, heavy downpour can turn roads and dry washes into fast-moving water in minutes.

That is why officials repeat the same warning after every storm: never drive into flooded roads or washes. Two of the three rescues involved vehicles.

What happens next

More rain was expected over the Halloween weekend, with showers possible on Saturday evening and rain chances rising overnight into Sunday. Residents and visitors were urged to check weather alerts before travelling.

City officials were expected to give further updates on the fatal rescue and on when Lake Mead Parkway would reopen.
