Romania scrambles F-16 jets after drone alerts in six counties near Moldova border

People in north-eastern Romania were told to take shelter on Saturday, 31 October 2026, after an aerial target was detected near the border with Moldova. Phones in Iași received an “extreme alert” RO-Alert message at 17:05, local time in Romania, warning of an “air alert (possible drone incursion)”. It told people to stay calm and shelter in basements or civil protection shelters, or stay inside, away from windows and outside walls.

Romania’s Ministry of National Defence said radar had detected the target about 10 kilometres from the Moldova border. Two Romanian Air Force F-16 jets, already on Air Policing duty, took off from the 71st Air Base at Câmpia Turzii to monitor it. Alerts were then extended across the north-east, to Neamț, Vaslui, Botoșani, Bacău and Suceava as well as Iași. A flight from Eindhoven due to land at Iași was redirected to Suceava.

Later that evening, the ministry reported a second incident: a new aerial target entered Romanian airspace without authorisation, from the direction of Moldova. Two more F-16s took off from the 86th Air Base at Fetești, with an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter, bringing the day’s total to four F-16s in two pairs. A drone also flew over Moldova’s airspace that day without authorisation. The ministry said 35 unauthorised incursions into Romanian airspace had been recorded since the start of 2026. The reports did not say where the aircraft came from, what type they were, or where they went, and neither mentioned injuries or damage.

Why it matters

Romania is a member of NATO, and it borders Ukraine and Moldova, so the war in Ukraine keeps spilling into its skies. Each incursion forces the same hard choice: send jets up to check a radar blip, warn whole counties to shelter, and disrupt flights, before it is clear what the aircraft is. For people in Iași, it was an evening message telling them to leave their windows and go downstairs.

What happens next

The defence ministry said it would return with more details. The key questions are what the two aircraft were, where they went, and whether anything was found on the ground. People in the affected counties should follow official RO-Alert messages and ministry updates, rather than videos or rumours online.
