Two Killed as Small Plane Crashes Onto Germany’s A2 Motorway and Bursts Into Flames
Two people were killed on Friday, 6 November 2026, when a small aircraft crashed onto the A2 motorway in north-eastern Germany and burst into flames. The plane came down on the Hannover-bound carriageway between the town of Burg and the Krähenberge rest area in Saxony-Anhalt, north-east of Magdeburg, at about 2:48 p.m. local time.
Police in Magdeburg said the aircraft caught fire completely on impact. Emergency crews recovered both occupants dead from the wreckage. The identities of the two people who died have not been released.
The aircraft was a two-seat Aerostyle Breezer ultralight, registration D-ESDA, belonging to Aero Club Kropp, an air sports club based in Schleswig-Holstein. Flight-tracking data showed it had left Schleswig Airport at about 12:33 p.m. local time on the day of the crash. Its intended destination is not known.
Germany’s air navigation service, Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS), said the aircraft was flying under Visual Flight Rules, which means the pilot navigated mainly by looking outside the cockpit and had to stay within set visibility and cloud-clearance limits. DFS could not immediately confirm whether the pilot had sent a distress call before the crash.
Why it matters
The crash closed the Hannover-bound lanes of the A2, one of Germany’s main east-west motorways, linking the Berlin area with Magdeburg, Hannover and the Ruhr region. Police said early findings showed no cars or other road vehicles were hit — a lucky escape on a busy motorway in the middle of a Friday afternoon. It is a reminder of how quickly a small aircraft in trouble can turn a road into a crash site, and how much depends on the pilot finding somewhere safe to land.
What happens next
The cause of the crash is still unknown. Police said their investigation is continuing, with fire and rescue crews and federal authorities involved in the response. Investigators will now look at the wreckage, the flight data and the weather conditions to work out why the aircraft came down. Officials have not yet said when the motorway will fully reopen or when the identities of the two people who died will be made public.
