Bayern keep Kompany away from all football work as he recovers from collapse

Bayern Munich are keeping head coach Vincent Kompany away from all football work while he recovers from the collapse that put him in hospital last week. The champions confirmed on Friday that the 40-year-old Belgian will play no part in planning for Saturday’s Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund — not even in conversation.

Kompany collapsed during a reserve-team training session on Friday, 23 October, and was taken to hospital for tests. Doctors diagnosed meningeal irritation, an inflammation of the tissue around the brain and spinal cord. He was discharged on Wednesday, 28 October, and is now recovering at home. Bayern said he had also been struggling with a viral infection and a hip injury before the collapse.

Assistant coach Aaron Danks, who is in charge of the team while Kompany is out, said the orders from the club were clear. “We don’t talk to him about football. We’ve been given clear instructions there,” Danks said on Friday. “He needs to recover and spend time with his family. We’re not getting him involved so he can be fully back at it when he returns.” Danks oversaw Bayern’s 6-1 German Cup win over Magdeburg.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl gave an update on Saturday, telling Sky Germany that Kompany was improving. “He’s getting better every day,” Eberl said. “That’s the most important thing right now.” He would not give a date for Kompany’s return, saying it was hard to say whether recovery would take days or weeks.

Why it matters

Kompany has led Bayern since May 2024, and his absence comes during a packed run of Bundesliga and Champions League fixtures. With the club’s biggest domestic game of the season so far falling while he is out, keeping Bayern’s unbeaten start on track has fallen to his assistants.

The episode has also started a wider conversation in German football about the pressure on head coaches. Several Bundesliga managers spoke during the week about the heavy demands of the job after Kompany’s collapse, and Bayern’s decision to shut him off from football shows how seriously the club is taking his recovery.

What happens next

Danks will stay in charge of the team until Kompany is cleared to return, and Bayern have set no date for that. The club’s priority, Eberl said, is to get through the recovery together — without setting a specific timeframe.
