Kane misses penalty as Bayern and Dortmund draw 2-2 in Der Klassiker
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund drew 2-2 in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, 31 October, with Harry Kane missing a penalty in his first match since winning the Ballon d’Or.
Kane showed the award to the home crowd before kick-off, but his day turned sour in the 56th minute. With Bayern 1-0 up through Konrad Laimer’s 38th-minute strike, the England captain fired his penalty against the crossbar after Felix Nmecha handled in the box. It was only his second missed penalty in the Bundesliga in 27 attempts, according to Opta.
Dortmund made Bayern pay. Serhou Guirassy levelled on the hour, before Kane headed Joshua Kimmich’s cross back across goal for Dayot Upamecano to restore Bayern’s lead in the 66th minute. But substitute Fabio Silva drilled home with a minute of normal time left to earn Dortmund a point, after the visitors had twice come from behind.
The game had its share of drama before the goals. Jobe Bellingham thought he had put Dortmund ahead, only for VAR to rule the goal out, and Bayern lost Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry to early injuries.
Afterwards Kane was honest about his day. “Of course, not the best day today but that’s life. You move on,” he said. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac said his side had earned “a well-deserved point”, adding: “Coming back twice here in Munich is no easy feat.”
Why it matters
The draw keeps the Bundesliga title race wide open. Both sides stay unbeaten after eight games and locked together on 18 points at the top of the table, with Bayern ahead only on goal difference. Dortmund showed they can go to Munich and fight back twice, while Bayern will feel they let two points slip away after dominating long spells and missing from the spot.
What happens next
Both teams return to league action next weekend, with Bayern looking to turn their dominance into wins and Dortmund aiming to keep their unbeaten start going. Kane, meanwhile, will want a goal quickly to put the penalty miss behind him.
