General Hospital wins again as Kelly Clarkson’s show takes top talk prize at Daytime Emmys
The 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards were held on Friday, 30 October, at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, celebrating the best of daytime television. ABC’s General Hospital took the night’s top drama prize, while The Kelly Clarkson Show won best daytime talk series in its final year.
General Hospital won Outstanding Daytime Drama Series for the sixth year in a row — its 19th win in the category, a record. The show also won for its writing team, for guest performer Jeff Kober as Cyrus Renault, and for casting.
The acting prizes went to two familiar faces. Tamara Tunie won lead actress for playing Anita Dupree in the new CBS soap Beyond the Gates, her first Daytime Emmy. Scott Clifton won lead actor for playing Liam Spencer in The Bold and the Beautiful, his second win in the category and his fourth Emmy overall. Beyond the Gates, in its first year of Emmy eligibility, collected four awards in total.
The talk-show prizes told a story of endings. The Kelly Clarkson Show, which aired its final episode in August after seven seasons, won Outstanding Daytime Talk Series. But the hosting prize went to Sherri Shepherd for Sherri, which ended its four-season run in May. General Hospital star Genie Francis, who has played Laura Spencer since 1977, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Why it matters
Daytime television is changing fast, and this year’s winners showed it. Two of the night’s biggest winners — the Clarkson and Sherri shows — have already ended, while a new soap, Beyond the Gates, made a strong first showing. At the same time, General Hospital’s record run shows that long-running soaps still hold their audience. For viewers, the night was both a farewell to familiar faces and a first look at the shows that will fill their place.
What happens next
The winners now return to work on the shows still on air, with General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless and Beyond the Gates continuing through the autumn. The Daytime Emmys return next year, when the next round of daytime dramas and talk shows will compete for the same prizes.
