Sifuna unveils Linda Mwananchi party headquarters as Kenya’s opposition gears up for 2027
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna unveiled the new national headquarters of the Linda Mwananchi Party in Lavington, Nairobi, on Friday, 30 October, turning a street movement into a formal party ahead of Kenya’s General Election on 10 August 2027. The launch was the formal step in rebranding the Equitable Party as the Linda Mwananchi Movement. The photo with this article shows the Nairobi skyline; it was not taken at the launch.
The event brought some of Kenya’s most prominent opposition leaders under one roof: former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa. Sifuna told the gathering: “We are placing the ordinary citizen at the centre of decision-making, not as spectators in their own country’s affairs, but as the reason this movement exists.”
Sifuna is the movement’s central figure. A leadership retreat on 27 September resolved to position him as its leader and preferred presidential candidate. But the launch exposed a fault line: when Musyoka cautioned against declaring Sifuna the candidate before formal processes were complete, sections of the crowd protested. Musyoka still harbours his own presidential ambitions, and Gachagua, impeached as deputy president in October 2025, brings Mount Kenya support.
The party plans offices in all 47 counties by December and will recruit candidates to contest under its ticket. Its message centres on the cost of living, unemployment, taxation and accountability — the core of its attack on President William Ruto’s government.
Why it matters
The gathering was the most visible coming-together of Kenya’s opposition leaders since the last election, giving Sifuna a formal vehicle and a stronger hand in coalition talks. But Kenya’s opposition has a history of grand launches falling apart over competing presidential ambitions, and Friday showed that tension is already live. Other allies are keeping options open: Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is building a separate vehicle, the Mwananchi Party, while Siaya Governor James Orengo has launched the Liberal Democratic Party.
What happens next
The movement had planned a rally in Kwale County on Saturday, 31 October, the first stop on a nationwide tour. A National Delegates Convention follows on 13 November, to advance the rebranding, adopt a constitution and ratify its leadership. Watch whether it settles the presidential question.
